One of the greatest strengths of social media is the ability to reach incredible numbers of people in many different places all at once. If you’re not reaching those people, you’re not fully utilising the power of the medium.
Here we’d like to provide you with a few universal strategies you can employ to
build a larger following on any social media platform.
The most important thing you can do for your social media presence is to pick the correct platform to build your following on. Every social media platform has its advantages and disadvantages, and selecting the right platform for you is the very first decision you should ever make.
Facebook offers excellent general reach, Instagram is ideally suited to image heavy content, Youtube is for videos, LinkedIn is for B2B networking, and so on.
Before going any further on your social media marketing journey, make sure you’ve set up shop on a platform where you can reasonably expect to succeed.
Once that’s done, you’re ready for step 2.
The ideal posting schedule is different for every audience, different groups expect different amounts of content at different times of the day and week.
What applies to all audiences however is that they like consistency. Finding the ideal day and time to post to your social media account is pointless if you aren’t posting consistently.
People are much more likely to remember you and stick around to hear what you have to say if it’s being presented to them on a reliable schedule. A little bit regularly is a lot more useful than everything all at once.
The flipside to this is that you actually need to have something to say. Don’t post just to post, make sure you have something to offer your followers.
If you’re already posting with a purpose, then you have a headstart on this section. In order to truly engage your audience though, you need to remember that social media doesn’t go just one way.
If you’re exclusively broadcasting to your audience without ever taking on board what they’re saying, you’re missing the point of social media. Listen to your audience, understand them, and respond to them.
If they have questions, answer them. If they have fears, soothe them. If they’re excited, encourage them. If they’re kind or helpful, thank them.
And make sure these interactions occur as soon as you can. Answering a question from two months ago isn’t going to have much of an impact. But if you can respond within a few hours, or at least a few days, you can maximise your engagement with your audience.
Social media is all about gathering together with others, so don’t forget to look around for others in your space. Some of them may be competitors, but that doesn’t have to stop you using them to boost your own profile.
Share and comment on the posts of others to add your voice to the conversation, and encourage them to share your posts as well to get yourself in front of a new audience.
If your platform of choice has groups (Facebook), subreddits (Reddit), or something similar, join them! Seek out places where like minded people gather and make yourself known.
The more people you can get yourself in front of, the more followers you have a chance to acquire. That’s why advertising campaigns are useful, for a fee you can send your posts out to people who would otherwise have never known you existed.
You’ll need to do some maths to work out if your expected returns are going to be worth the investment, but it’s an option you should keep in mind if you really want to boost your reach.
Building an audience on social media isn’t something that happens overnight, it takes effort and patience to get where you want to be. But with the massive power social media has to offer, it’s going to be worth it.
